Google brings generative UI into AI Overviews
Per a Google announcement dated August 19, 2026, the interface that builds custom tools and simulations on the fly for complex concepts is live globally in English in AI Mode and has started rolling out in AI Overviews. The same announcement covers practice quizzes including standardized tests, step by step coaching from a photo in Lens, class notebooks in AI Mode and study documents generated from uploaded files. Notebooks are offered in more than 180 countries, excluding the European Economic Area. Search Engine Journal writes that sites built around calculators and comparison tools could see more direct overlap.
The Preferred Sources button opens to sites
Per a Google announcement dated August 20, 2026, publishers can embed an interactive button on their pages asking readers to select them as a Preferred Source; those sources appear more often in Top Stories, AI Overviews and AI Mode, and more than 600,000 unique sources have been selected so far. The same announcement covers customizing the Discover feed in your own words from the three dot menu and choosing topics for audio briefings in Google News. Search Engine Land notes that Discover customization could help surface niche topics.
Microsoft Advertising removes Max CPC from new campaigns
Per Search Engine Journal and Search Engine Land reports dated August 20, 2026, Microsoft Advertising will not offer the Max CPC field on new non portfolio campaigns from October 1, 2026. The change covers new campaigns using Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize Conversions, Maximize Conversion Value and Maximize Clicks. Existing campaigns, portfolio bid strategies, Target Impression Share and Enhanced CPC are unaffected. Microsoft says the ceiling can interfere with automated bidding optimizing toward stated goals and recommends managing through budgets and target values.
The agenda moves fast, the system stays calm.
