Google Pics is live: Nano Banana image creation and editing comes to Workspace

With an official announcement dated September 1, 2026, Google made Google Pics, the Workspace image creation and editing tool, available. It is rolling out over the coming weeks to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers and most Workspace business customers, and the Docs and Slides integration started with the announcement.

Image creation moved inside Workspace

According to the announcement published on Google's official blog on September 1, 2026, Google Pics is now available. Pics is an image creation and editing tool built by Workspace.

Per the announcement, the tool is rolling out over the coming weeks to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers and to most Workspace business customers.

Pics works in two forms: as a standalone product and embedded inside Workspace apps. Google writes that the integration starts with Slides, Docs and Drive. The tool opens at pics.new.

Social Media Today covered the announcement the same day and listed Pics among Google's new AI image and video tools.

02 · THE DETAILS

The model, the capabilities and the rollout schedule

Pics is built on Google's Nano Banana image generation and editing model. Google frames the tool around editing more than generation: the point is to make precise changes on an existing image rather than starting from scratch every time.

The announcement lists four capabilities. The first is object segmentation: an object can be isolated and transformed without altering the rest of the image. Users can leave text comments on specific areas to request targeted changes and run several edits at once.

The second is in-image text editing and translation. Text inside an image can be edited or translated without disrupting the design or changing the font.

The third is collaboration. A generated image can be shared, and several people can edit the same image together.

The fourth is multiple generations. A single prompt produces several options, and the user picks from those iterations.

The rollout is staged. Google says the Workspace integration started on announcement day with Docs and Slides, and that Drive will be added in the coming weeks.

Google explains the reasoning through usage volume: per the announcement, millions of users interact with billions of images across Workspace products every month. The company's goal is to remove the need to jump between applications to create and share visuals.

03 · WHY IT MATTERS

What is new is not generation, it is where generation sits

The assessment in this section is ours. Generating images with AI has been possible for a while. The real change in this announcement is that generation leaves a separate tab and moves inside the deck and the document. Where a tool sits can matter as much as what it does.

The second difference is in editing rather than generation. Being able to isolate an object and change it turns a one-off output into a reusable asset. The image stops being a finished result and starts behaving like a working file.

Translating text inside an image without breaking the font is a practical shortcut for multilingual communication. The same visual does not have to be produced again for a second language.

Shared editing takes image production out of one person's hands. The approval loop can live on a single surface instead of files passed back and forth. In small teams, most of the time goes into feedback rounds rather than production itself.

The limit is worth noting too. The rollout depends on a subscription or Workspace business status and moves in stages. Access does not open for everyone at the same moment, so one team may see the tool while another does not yet.

What it means for businesses in Türkiye

In-image text editing and translation is a visible time saving for businesses that operate in both Turkish and English. Instead of producing two separate versions of a campaign visual, the text on a single visual can be changed.

For small teams the real gain is consistency more than speed. Variants derived from the same source image make it easier to hold a brand line than visuals generated from scratch each time.

There is a caveat. Making the output match a brand identity is still a direction problem. The model does not decide your corporate color, typography and tone; when those decisions are not defined in advance, the output stays undefined as well.

On the advertising side there is a second heading to watch. The advertising regulation change that took effect in Türkiye on August 1, 2026 requires clear disclosure for digital characters that cannot be distinguished from humans. Producing a product or campaign visual falls outside that scope, but if an AI generated human face is used in an advertisement, the disclosure question arrives.

The practical conclusion: the tool lowers the cost of production, not the cost of decisions. What gets produced and where it is used is still a decision made on the brand side.
