ChatGPT will draw local reviews from a licensed source

Yelp has licensed its reviews, ratings, photos and business information to OpenAI. ChatGPT will be able to use that content when answering local questions, showing Yelp branding and links, with the Request a Quote feature to follow. The deal is not exclusive and the financial terms were not disclosed.

01 · WHAT HAPPENED?

Local data gets licensed into a chat interface

Under the agreement reported on July 23, 2026, first covered by Axios, Yelp licensed its reviews, ratings, photos and business information to OpenAI. ChatGPT can use that content when answering a local question, and Yelp's branding and links appear when it does. Yelp's Request a Quote feature is also set to be added, letting users reach service providers straight from the chat interface. According to Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman, OpenAI controls how that experience is presented. The deal is not exclusive: Yelp can license to other AI companies and already distributes content through channels such as Yahoo+ and Apple Maps. Financial terms were not disclosed.

02 · DETAILS

Local data is the expensive raw material of AI answers

The deal does not come out of nowhere. A local search analysis published in May 2026 found that Yelp collected 512,680 citations across four AI platforms in the last quarter of 2025, roughly 3.4 times the 149,710 of the second-ranked Better Business Bureau. Google AI Mode drove 340,721 of those citations (66%), with Perplexity second at 146,196. The same analysis reports that Yelp took 72.5% of citations within the competitive set on AI Mode, and gathered around 290,000 citations on proximity-intent queries, against roughly 87,000 for all of its rivals combined.

User trust, on the other hand, is not moving at the same pace. Morning Consult research cited by Search Engine Land found that only 15% of Americans trust AI search a lot. That gap explains why model companies are turning to licensed, branded sources rather than raw crawling: in local recommendations, wrong information sends someone to the wrong address or a closed business.

03 · WHY IT MATTERS

Local discovery moves from ranking to being cited

For years, local visibility meant appearing near the top of a results list. In chat interfaces there is no list, just one answer, and whose name appears inside it is what counts. AI companies licensing local data signals that these answers will be fed by structured sources treated as trustworthy rather than by random web crawling. The question a business asks changes accordingly: not only "where does my site rank?" but "am I present, accurate and current in the data layer the assistant trusts?"

04 · TÜRKİYE

What it means for businesses in Türkiye

Yelp is not a widely used platform in Türkiye, so the direct impact of this deal is limited. The model it establishes is the point: AI assistants build local answers from structured, verifiable and regularly updated sources. In Türkiye that layer is largely the Google Business Profile, map data and customer reviews. The practical checklist is short: write the business name, address and phone identically across every channel, keep opening hours and holidays current, describe services and products clearly, respond to reviews regularly and refresh photos. On your own site, structured data (schema) that makes business details, service lists and frequently asked questions machine-readable does the work. Short, direct answers to real questions make it easier for chat interfaces to cite you.

The UNALSOFT take

Our reading is this: visibility in AI search is not an SEO trick, it is a matter of data hygiene. Consistent business information, structured data on the site and content written to answer questions directly are what let assistants represent you correctly. In our web design service we build sites to be readable not only by people but by search engines and AI assistants too: clean business data, a schema layer and an answer-first content structure.

Let assistants describe you correctly.

Let's review your business data and how readable your site really is.
