WhatsApp Web opens voice and video calling
WhatsApp announced on July 28, 2026 that voice and video calling is now available through the browser. One-to-one and group calls can be made from WhatsApp Web with no app download. The same announcement covers call transfer, waiting rooms, QuickHD and noise suppression. The features are rolling out gradually.
Calling moved into the browser
In a post on its own blog, WhatsApp announced that voice and video calls can now be made and received through WhatsApp Web. Both one-to-one and group calls are supported and no separate app download is required. Calls on the web are end-to-end encrypted, and the company states there is no time limit and no cost. The interface includes screen sharing, in-call reactions and a dedicated calls tab that carries the call history.
Call transfer, waiting rooms and two quality upgrades
The second half of the announcement covers four items around the calling experience. Call transfer allows an active call to be moved between devices without hanging up: a conversation that started on a phone can be handed to the desktop or the web, and the other way round. Waiting rooms add control over who joins a group call. When a call link is created with approval to join enabled, the people who click it stay in a waiting room until you let them in.
The remaining two are about call quality. QuickHD lifts video to high definition from the very first seconds of a call, so you are not waiting for the connection to settle before the picture is clear. Noise suppression cuts background sound so your voice comes through more cleanly in loud or busy places. WhatsApp says the features are being enabled gradually and will reach everyone soon, so it is normal for them not to appear for every user at once.
The customer conversation changes location
WhatsApp has long sat at the centre of written communication while calling stayed on the phone. Moving calls into the browser is a practical threshold for teams that spend the day at a computer. When a customer message arrives you no longer have to pick up a handset to continue; you can carry on from the desk with a headset. Having screen sharing in the same interface also reduces the need to open a separate meeting tool.
Call transfer is the most visible piece of this. In work that moves between the field and the office, a conversation surviving a device change is a real gain. Waiting rooms address a different need: group calls opened through a link scatter easily and links get passed around. An approval step makes it possible to talk while knowing who is actually in the room. Taken together, WhatsApp is moving past being a casual chat app and towards a communication surface that works on the desktop.
What it means for businesses in Türkiye
A large share of customer contact in Türkiye runs over WhatsApp: appointments, quotes, order tracking, service records. The point where that flow usually breaks is the moment a written exchange needs a spoken explanation. The customer cannot type the question, a call is needed, and the conversation moves to another channel. Calling in the browser softens that break, because the person handling support can keep the thread on screen while talking.
Three practical notes. First, because the features roll out gradually, start with whoever has them today and do not build the process around a single person. Second, if you share links for group calls, keeping join approval switched on stops the wrong person landing in a client meeting. Third, record discipline: WhatsApp is a chat app, not a customer record. A commitment, a price or an appointment given on a call has to be written into your own system. Under KVKK as well, the purpose of a conversation touching personal data and the place it is recorded are too important to leave inside a chat screen.
The UNALSOFT take
On the sites we build, WhatsApp is not a decorative icon, it is the conversion path itself. In our web design work we set up a flow that connects a visitor to the right person with a prepared message, and the fact that this conversation can now become a voice call in the same browser shortens the time it takes for site interest to cool. What matters is not where the conversation starts, but that it is clear where its outcome gets written down.
Channels change, the system stays in place.
Let's build the path from your site to the customer conversation together.
