Meta tests automatic DM replies to Instagram ad comments by keyword
Meta is testing a feature that automatically sends a private message to users who comment a specified keyword on an Instagram ad. Advertisers can select five keywords and write the message themselves. The feature currently appears for select advertisers and only inside Instagram ad setup tools.
An automatic step from comment to private message
Per Social Media Today reporting dated August 25, 2026, Meta is trialing a new advertising tool on Instagram called Reply to Keywords.
The mechanic is simple: the advertiser defines specific keywords. When a user comments one of them on a promoted post, the system sends that person a pre-written private message.
The stated aim is removing the need for advertisers to monitor comments and reply individually. Per the reporting it is described as an automation that saves time.
Limits, message content and how it relates to existing tools
There is a limit on keywords: the advertiser can select at most five. Each one triggers the automatic message when used in a comment.
The advertiser writes the message content. Per Meta, that message can include a link, a phone number or an email address, so interest in the comment thread can connect straight to a contact step.
The example use case given is this: a brand asks users to comment a particular word to receive more information, and the corresponding details are then sent automatically.
The scope is narrow right now. The feature appears only for select advertisers and inside Instagram ad setup tools, and is not present for Facebook ads.
The functionality is not entirely new. Per Social Media Today, similar capability was already offered through Meta inbox automation and Meta Business Agent options. What is new is placing the tool directly inside the Instagram ad setup flow.
The feature was first reported by Jon Loomer, who covers Meta ads. Meta has published no official announcement, so it should be read as a feature still in testing.
The comment thread turns into a lead channel
The assessment in this section is ours. Social media has a long standing pattern: when users are interested in a product they usually leave a question in the comments rather than writing a private message. Price questions, stock questions and address questions all pile up there.
That interest usually evaporates, because following comments is manual work highly exposed to delay. An answer arriving an hour later and no answer at all often produce the same result.
That is exactly where the value of this feature sits. It drops response time to zero and moves the conversation from a public comment thread into a private message, which is where a sales conversation belongs anyway.
The second point is scale. The five keyword limit shows the tool is designed as a simple trigger rather than a complex flow. That is a good thing, since complex rule sets are rarely set up correctly in the field.
The third is knowing the limit. An automatic message is not a sales conversation, it is a door opener. Flows where no real person takes over afterward create bigger disappointment. We stressed the same point when covering the Meta AI assistant for small businesses: automation accelerates first contact, it does not build the relationship.
The fourth is the pattern spreading. Comment and message automation has until now been the territory of third party tools. The platform taking it into its own ad flow narrows their value proposition.
What it means for businesses in Türkiye
The assessment below does not appear in the sources, it is our reading. The test provides no information about Türkiye.
Türkiye is one of the markets where this feature could land hardest, because sales conversations here run overwhelmingly through messaging. The flow from an Instagram comment to a private message and then to a phone call or WhatsApp is effectively the only sales line for many businesses.
The practical opportunity is this: because the message can carry a link, the user can be sent straight to a booking form or a WhatsApp conversation. For salons, clinics, repair services and local service businesses, that means capturing interest that would otherwise be lost.
The second point is expectation management. When an automated message obviously reads as a robot, the user backs away. The message needs to be short, clear and point at the next step. One question and one link usually works better than a long promotional paragraph.
The third is data responsibility. If you pull a user into a private message and collect a phone number or email, that is personal data processing under KVKK. The disclosure obligation and the question of where the data is stored have to be answered before the automation is built.
The fourth is commercial electronic message rules. A user who comments a keyword receiving an automatic informational message is not the same as sending that person marketing messages later. The second requires separate consent.
The fifth is preparation. To be ready when the feature spreads to Türkiye, what can be done today is listing the most frequent comment questions and defining a one sentence answer and a next step for each.
The UNALSOFT take
In the flows we build on the advertising management side, one principle never moves: automation gives the first answer, a person closes the work. A message returning within seconds of a keyword comment is valuable because it makes contact while the user is still interested. But if there is no human at the end of that message, the speed gained turns into trust lost. That is why we write down three things before building this kind of automation: what the automatic message will say, at which step a person takes over, and where the collected data will sit. The third is usually skipped, and that is where the most expensive mistake shows up.
