Reddit opens its 15-second video goal: payment can now follow longer watch time

Per Reddit's official announcement dated September 1, 2026, the 15-second Engaged Video Views goal is now in public beta for all advertisers globally. The goal works as both an optimization target and a billing unit.

01 · WHAT HAPPENED?

A new optimization goal and a new billing unit

With an announcement dated September 1, 2026, Reddit introduced 15-second Engaged Video Views for video advertisers. The post was published on the company's advertising blog by product marketing.

The goal does two jobs at once. It is an optimization target that shapes who the campaign is shown to, and a billing option that defines what the advertiser pays for.

Per Reddit, the feature is in public beta and available to all advertisers worldwide.

Social Media Today covered the announcement around the same time and noted that the new option complements the existing 6-second goal.

02 · THE DETAILS

How a view is counted and how bidding works

The counting rule depends on video length. For videos of 15 seconds or shorter, a completed view counts as an engaged video view. For videos longer than 15 seconds, the user has to watch for at least 15 seconds.

Advertisers pay only for those views. Reddit lists lowest cost and cost cap among the automated bidding options and says they reduce the need to keep adjusting manual cost per view bids by hand.

The company also shared numbers from the alpha stage. Advertisers in alpha testing saw a 51 percent higher 15-second view-through rate and a 71 percent higher video completion rate on average.

The announcement defines the difference between the two goals as well. Per Reddit, a 6-second view is a strong signal that someone noticed the ad. A 15-second view indicates the viewer stayed long enough to absorb more of the story, the product value or the brand message.

Reddit recommends the 15-second goal for creative such as film, TV, gaming and entertainment trailers, product demos, feature explainers, testimonials, brand storytelling and longer-form work whose key message builds over time. It also writes that when the message lands almost immediately, or the creative is shorter, the 6-second goal may still be the better fit.

During the beta, Reddit Split Testing can be used to measure the new goal against the existing 6-second one. Reddit's test rules are explicit: for eligible split tests, campaigns should run at the ad group level for at least two weeks with automated bidding, lowest cost is preferred, and campaigns should not be paused during the test period. Post-campaign reporting in beta measurement can include view-through rate and cost per view.

The announcement includes an example as well. The Times compared the two goals through split testing and saw improvements across key video metrics with the 15-second approach.

03 · WHY IT MATTERS

When a metric becomes a billing unit, the creative changes too

The assessment in this section is ours. The definition of a view is not only a reporting matter. The moment a threshold becomes a billing unit, it also decides where the budget flows.

With a 6-second goal the system looks for people likely to watch briefly. With a 15-second goal the profile it looks for changes. So what shifts is not only the payment, it is who you end up in front of.

That feeds straight back into the creative brief. If you are paying against a 15-second threshold, holding the first 15 seconds is no longer a preference, it is a budget decision. When the message arrives becomes as important as what the message says.

It is worth noting that the percentages Reddit shared come from alpha testing and are the company's own data. They are a direction, not a guarantee. Reddit itself recommends finding the right answer by testing.

The clarity of the test rules is notable in its own right. Running at ad group level, keeping the test alive for at least two weeks and not pausing it reads almost like a list of the mistakes most teams make in split tests.

Finally, the two goals do not replace one another. Reddit keeps both and ties the choice to creative length and to how quickly the message lands. The right question is not which is better, but which one the video in your hands fits.

04 · TÜRKİYE

What it means for businesses in Türkiye

The assessment below is not in the source, it is our reading. The announcement holds no Türkiye specific information; Reddit only states that the feature is open to all advertisers worldwide.

Reddit does not sit high on the media plan of most businesses in Türkiye. The value of this story is less about the platform and more about the unit of measurement it introduces.

The same question applies today to Meta, YouTube and TikTok campaigns: which watch duration are you actually buying? Most campaigns are built without asking it and simply run on the default goal, and the default is usually tuned to find the cheapest engagement.

In videos that carry a product demo, a service explanation or a customer testimonial, the message rarely lands within 6 seconds. Running that kind of creative against a goal optimized for short views can mean buying views that are cheap and ineffective.

The test discipline transfers directly as well. A test built at ad group level, running uninterrupted for at least two weeks and left alone until it finishes gives a more reliable result on any platform. Many campaigns in Türkiye become unreadable because of early intervention.

The short term takeaway: whatever the platform, if you do not know which watch threshold your campaign pays for, you do not know what you built the opening seconds of the creative around either.

The UNALSOFT angle

On the advertising management side, the first thing we settle when building a campaign is what the goal actually buys, because the choice of goal defines the creative brief backwards. Reddit's announcement is useful precisely because it writes that link down: 6 seconds measures attention, 15 seconds measures whether the message settled. Our recommendation to clients is to judge a video not by its length but by the second at which the message lands. If it lands at second 12, paying against a 6-second goal buys views without buying comprehension. Confirming that distinction through a test does not take long, as long as the test is not cut short.
