KVKK principle decision: owning the corporate email account does not give employers an unlimited right to monitor staff communications

Türkiye's Personal Data Protection Board adopted principle decision 2026/2035 on September 16, 2026, and it was published in Official Gazette issue 33394 on October 8, 2026. Owning the tool gives employers no unlimited oversight of staff communications, and processing only traffic and log records already counts as processing personal data. A generic notice that the account may be monitored is not enough, and employee consent should as a rule not be the primary basis. Monitoring has to be graduated, with content opened only in exceptional cases where traffic data review falls short. Covert monitoring staff were never told about will be treated as unlawful. The scope can also reach internal messaging, customer relationship systems and meeting platform chats.

Google opens SynthID Detector to everyone: images, video and audio can now be checked for an AI watermark

On October 7, 2026 Google made SynthID Detector available to the public worldwide; the tool at synthid.com runs in English for now. It shows whether an uploaded image, video or audio file was generated with AI from Google or from SynthID partners such as OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao, and Google says Apple will join them soon. Google has been embedding the SynthID watermark in its generated media since 2023, and by its count more than 180 billion images and videos plus 240,000 years of audio have been marked since then. TechCrunch notes that such tools are not infallible, so a missing watermark should not be read as proof a human made the content.
