Etsy bans AI-generated patterns and recipes and requires an unedited real photo in listings

On October 22, 2026 Etsy updated its seller rules. AI-written functional guides like knitting patterns or recipes are now prohibited, and Etsy says bot listings that involve no human are not allowed; most listings must carry at least one unedited photo of the real item against a real background.

01 · WHAT HAPPENED

Etsy redrew the limits on how sellers can use AI

According to PPC Land, Etsy announced the tighter AI rules on October 22, 2026 in a post on Etsy News. It was written by Etsy's Customer Operations VP, James Ossman, and is titled Creativity and Trust in the Age of AI. The changes amend the Listing Image Requirements section of Etsy's House Rules, and PPC Land says they apply to nearly six million sellers. The official announcement also appears on the Etsy Community site; that page shows no absolute date, so the October 22 date rests on Value Added Resource and PPC Land.

Three changes stand out. Listings need a minimum of one photo of the real item, shot against a real background and left unedited. Bot-generated listings with no human involvement are explicitly not allowed. And functional guides that make buyers put in effort, such as patterns and recipes, may no longer be produced with AI, and such listings must also display an actual finished result that follows the instructions.

02 · DETAILS

What is banned and what stays allowed

As Value Added Resource describes it, the ban reaches patterns for knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, quilting and beading, as well as recipes, plans for woodworking and construction, instruction manuals and other guides meant to help a buyer finish a specific task. Sellers of patterns, recipes, seeds and similar products must add a real, unedited photo of a finished result made or grown with the product. A crochet pattern listing, for instance, should show a piece that was actually made, not an AI picture of how it might look.

The required photo cannot be cropped, resized, straightened, adjusted for lighting or exposure, or given a new background. Other listing images can still be edited, including with AI tools, as long as they represent the item accurately. Print-on-demand sellers can keep using authorized stock mockups, most digital downloads need a visual preview of what the buyer receives, and sellers of customized goods should show real examples of earlier work. AI-assisted digital art stays allowed if the seller discloses the AI use and does not pass the work off as fully handmade or fully their own, while AI prompt bundles remain prohibited. Disclosing AI help in photo editing is recommended but not required; disclosure is required when AI creates the product itself.

03 · WHY IT MATTERS

Buyer trust, refund exposure and the order of enforcement

Value Added Resource reports that Etsy acknowledged many active buyers cannot tell which items involve AI content, ranking that among the top three barriers to shopping more often. If a buyer receives something materially different from the listing, the seller may be responsible for the refund. Misleading listings can be removed and repeat violations can lead to shop removal. Sellers who want to contest a removal can do so from the Policy Violations page inside Shop Manager.

Enforcement is staged. The listing form will warn sellers when it detects an AI image at upload, with plans to extend that to existing listings. Buyers get a way to flag misleading AI imagery, though Etsy says those reports will not trigger immediate enforcement at first. PPC Land says removals of violating listings will expand over the coming months. The announcement gives no effective date or transition period, and Value Added Resource notes that existing listings must be brought into line without a stated deadline. The sources also flag open questions: Value Added Resource says the policy does not define how much human involvement is enough and that Etsy has not explained how it will separate deliberate edits from automatic processing by cameras and phones. PPC Land points out that the post contains no measurements, and Jezebel questions how verification can work at this scale and who will review the reports.

04 · TÜRKİYE

The sources say nothing about Türkiye, so this section is commentary

We found no mention of Türkiye in the Etsy Community announcement, Value Added Resource, PPC Land or Jezebel. The sources give no figure for sellers in Türkiye, say nothing about country-specific differences in the rules and offer no local timeline. This section is therefore not a fact taken from the sources but explicitly UNALSOFT commentary.

Our reading: we know that Turkish sellers sell crafts and digital products abroad through Etsy, but that is our own observation, not a claim made by these sources. For such a seller, a real product photo is now a required part of the listing. Several things remain unknown: the effective date, how long existing listings get, what penalties apply beyond removal and possible shop removal, and how the detection tools will work. Until those are clear, auditing your listings now is a sensible preparation.

The UNALSOFT view

We read this as a story about image discipline: Etsy has turned the raw, unedited product photo into a trust signal. Whether you sell on a marketplace or in your own store, keeping the untouched original of each product shot in the catalog, separate from the polished storefront images, is a practical way to be ready for rules like this. We set up this kind of arrangement for businesses that want to manage originals and edited versions apart in their own e-commerce panel. Because the sources contain nothing about Türkiye, this piece does not suggest any local rule or legal consequence.
