Cursor launches Origin, a code hosting platform rivaling GitHub

Cursor announced Origin, which will compete with GitHub in code hosting. The platform offers code browsing and editing, pull request management and repository storage, and it interoperates with GitHub. The timing is notable: on launch day GitHub suffered a global outage lasting over six hours.

01 · WHAT HAPPENED?

What Origin does

Per a TechCrunch report dated August 18, 2026, Origin is a code hosting platform enabling developers to collaboratively work on codebases, browse and edit code, manage pull requests and store repositories.

The platform aims to work alongside GitHub rather than replace it. In the words of Cursor, your GitHub repos can sit alongside the ones Cursor hosts, with the ability to sync between platforms.

Per a SiliconANGLE report dated August 17, 2026, Origin is accessed through a new tab in the Cursor desktop client and a command line tool. It launched with a ready connection for the Vercel app hosting platform and connections for Depot Technologies and Buildkite tools.

Per the same publication Cursor supports two kinds of agents: those running on the user desktop and those running in a cloud based sandbox. Cloud agents can continue long running coding tasks even while the developer computer is off.

The timing of the launch and the GitHub picture

Per TechCrunch, on the same day as the launch, August 18, 2026, GitHub suffered a global outage lasting over six hours with an error rate approaching 20 percent worldwide.

That was not an isolated event. Per the report, LeadDev analysis shows GitHub recorded 257 outages over the past 12 months, a picture contributing to a visible exodus of high profile users.

The difference in scale remains large though. TechCrunch notes that as of October 2025 roughly 180 million developers used GitHub. This is a small player competing against a very large incumbent.

Cursor also shared its plans. Per both publications the company is preparing agent native features, details unspecified, and a broader app ecosystem.

03 · WHY IT MATTERS

Single provider dependency is a commercial risk, not a technical one

The most generalizable part of this story is dependency rather than code hosting. Tying an entire workflow to a provider that recorded 257 outages in a year looks like a technical choice while being a commercial risk. That assessment is ours.

Second, the challenger strategy. Origin proposes sitting beside GitHub rather than replacing it. Interoperability is the classic approach to lowering switching cost, since it does not force a migration in a single day.

Third, agents merging with hosting. Having the place where code sits and the place where agents run on the same platform means agent based development moving into the infrastructure. Code hosting is no longer only storage.

Fourth, the weight of scale. Competing against an incumbent with 180 million developers is decided by the cost of migration more than by product quality. Outages lower that cost without eliminating it. That comment is ours.

What it means for businesses in Türkiye

The directly affected group is software teams, but the lesson is wider. For most businesses here GitHub is an abstract topic, while the same dependency question applies to every critical provider: your ecommerce infrastructure, your payment provider, your email service or your hosting company.

The practical question is this: if that provider goes down for six hours, does your business stop, slow down or stay unaffected? For a business that does not know the answer, that risk is unmeasured.

For companies with a software team, the concrete suggestion is asking about exit cost before moving to a provider. Can you take your data out, will your workflows run elsewhere? The interoperability emphasis in Origin targets exactly that concern. Asking the same question of every provider is a reasonable habit.
