Google moves links higher in AI Mode and AI Overviews

On October 15, 2026, in a post on The Keyword, Google's Hema Budaraju set out five link changes for AI Mode and AI Overviews. Inline links will appear nearer the top of answers, and more often. For tasks where the web offers just one or two official destinations, Google is testing a separate section for those links at the top of the answer. Carousels for timely articles are expanding to more locations and languages, and clickable creator names that lead to Search profiles are being tested in AI Mode video results. Google says Preferred Sources usage has grown more than 7x this year. Search Console still counts every link in an AI Overview as one position, Search Engine Journal notes.

Google opens Universal Cart in the US: one cart across Search and Gemini, with a one-way handoff to merchants

On October 15, 2026 Google started rolling out Universal Cart in the US across Search and the Gemini app. The cart keeps items from different stores together, draws on more than 60 billion listings in Google's Shopping Graph to alert shoppers to price drops and restocks, and uses Google Wallet to recognise card perks and surface promo codes. Checkout happens either inside the cart with Google Pay or on the merchant's own site after the items are transferred, and in both cases the sale belongs to the merchant. The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) powers checkout, and in this first release the handoff to the merchant runs one way. Google lists Nike, Sephora, Target, Walmart and many Shopify merchants.
