Meta removes the sentence that could have tied crawled business sites to AI training

Nieman Lab reported on October 15, 2026 that Meta’s new Commercial Terms let Meta, or anyone acting for it, use automated software to crawl the domains, pages and URLs tied to the products and services of anyone with a business account on Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp. The first version also said that content could be used to train its products. After the backlash, The Verge reported on October 17 that the sentence had been removed. The effective date shows as October 30, 2026, and the crawling permission remains for ads and business products. Meta spokesperson Daniel Roberts said site owners can state their preferences through robots.txt. In UNALSOFT’s view, site owners should review their robots.txt settings.

Cloudflare will score whether Verified bots obey robots.txt and 429s, with customer-set trust thresholds

In a blog post dated October 16, 2026, Cloudflare introduced a system that continuously measures how well Verified bots respect site preferences. It already runs internally. The first signals are whether a bot follows robots.txt instructions and whether it slows down or pauses after an HTTP 429 response, and results will be expressed as an explainable trust band. Publishing scores on Radar, widening the measured behaviors, offering the system to all Cloudflare customers and letting customers choose the trust threshold are listed as plans. The post also points to Cloudflare’s 2025 removal of Perplexity’s bot from its Verified bot list as a precedent.
