Months into removing manual placements, Meta shows advertisers four ways to keep control
Meta has published new guidance on how much say advertisers keep over where their ads appear as ad delivery becomes more automated. Over recent months, manual placement selection was already removed from ads built on the engagement, leads, app promotion and sales objectives. In its place, Meta points to creative customization, value rules, account-level exclusions and partnership ads.
Placement selection is gone from four objectives, and the guidance offers substitutes
Writing in Social Media Today on October 12, 2026, Andrew Hutchinson reported that Meta has shared guidance on the changes to its placement settings. It sits on a Meta Business Help Center page titled "What's New in Placement Settings in Meta Ads Manager". According to the report, Meta has spent recent months phasing out manual placement options, which means advertisers can no longer keep campaigns away from spots such as Facebook search results or the in-stream ads that run between Reels.
How far the change reaches depends on the objective. Placement controls are gone for engagement, leads, app promotion and sales ads, while awareness and traffic campaigns keep them for the time being. The author thinks it is likely that every Meta ad will soon lose placement control. That is his own assessment, not something Meta has said.
Creative, bids, account settings and partnerships: the four alternatives
The first route Meta suggests is media customization. Multi-media ads in the new Ads Manager creative workflow let advertisers upload several images and videos, then set the aspect ratio, copy, URL and delivery settings for each asset individually. The second is placement value rules, which let an advertiser push bids up or down on a given placement according to how much it is worth to the business. As Social Media Today quotes the guidance, "Meta will then optimize for outcomes based on these rules."
The third route is account-level placement exclusions, defined per objective inside the account control tools. The fourth covers partnership ads: when these run with Advantage+ placements, the advertiser still decides which media and text are used and can restrict where the partnership shows up. For background, the first signs of the shift appeared in late August. PPC Land reported on August 27, 2026 that advertisers had noticed on August 25 that the placements control had vanished from Ads Manager in favour of value rules. At that point value rules could raise a bid by up to 1,000 percent but cut it by no more than 90 percent, so a placement could not be switched off entirely. The same report cited Meta documentation saying Advantage+ placements averaged an 11.7 percent lower cost per action (CPA) than manual settings. Marketing Dive wrote on August 27 that the option to exclude platforms was also being removed, with no timeline announced at the time.
Control moves from a single checkbox into how the campaign is built
Small and mid-sized businesses running sales or lead campaigns can no longer decide where an ad appears by ticking a box. What Meta's alternatives have in common is that control shifts from a setting into creative and bid weighting: assets prepared at the right size and with the right copy for each placement, rules that say which placements matter more, and limits drawn across the whole account.
For businesses that care about brand safety, this adds new steps to every campaign setup that are no longer optional. Account-level exclusions and placement-specific creative sets used to be fine-tuning; now they carry the weight that the placement checkboxes once did. Social Media Today reads the move as Meta heading toward fully automated, AI-driven placement, and since awareness and traffic campaigns may end up in the same place, it makes sense to build planning around these tools now. We covered a related addition to the Ads Manager exclusion toolkit, exclusion-only custom audiences, on August 13.
The sources say nothing about Türkiye, so this section is UNALSOFT commentary
None of the sources contains any information about Türkiye, and none says which countries or regions the change covers. What follows is therefore not drawn from the reporting but is explicitly UNALSOFT commentary.
Because Ads Manager is a single global interface, it seems reasonable that businesses running campaigns in Türkiye will meet the same change, but nothing in the sources confirms that. The open questions are worth listing one by one: whether the change is global or specifically covers accounts in Türkiye, the date on which Meta published or updated the help center guidance, when awareness and traffic objectives will lose their controls, and whether the 90 percent cap on bid reductions reported in August still applies under the October guidance. Until those answers are clear, the safest course for campaigns in Türkiye is to check the settings inside the account itself on a regular basis.
UNALSOFT's take
We read this less as a loss and more as work changing places. Instead of switching a placement off, the job now is to prepare a creative set that looks right in every placement, to use data to establish which placements actually add value to the business, and to express that in value rules. For accounts where brand safety matters, reviewing account-level exclusions before a campaign goes live is critical as well. In our ad management work we treat these three steps, placement-aware creative, value rules and an account settings check, as separate setup items.
